The trio work together as the Phantom Thieves, promising to steal the treasures out of six other palaces. The game’s combat has been simplified a fair bit. For starters, each character’s Persona (or Persona II) have only three skills available. While One Mores, Baton Passes, Gun Attacks and All-out Attacks all return from the predecessor, they have also been simplified, (with the exception of Gun Attacks). Downing an enemy, rather than allowing a party member to freely act again with any of their available skills, grants the option of either using a single fixed skill—typically (but not always) an attack keyed to their element, or Baton Passing to let an ally do the same.

There are certain side characters that have quests to complete. Beating said side quests unlocks interactions with Daily Life.

All-Out Attacks can now be initiated by any party member (except navigators) once every enemy has been downed. A new feature to this game are Highlight which are performed in a similar vein to Showtime, albeit it is performed with only one character rather than two. After charging up a meter, a character can be selected and they will use a Highlight. Some Highlight like Lufel's are stat buffs or health recovery rather than attacks. The protagonist's highlight has different versions depending on which type Persona that he has summoned with during the battle.

There are current development plans to release in other regions such as North America with localization. This release is to be followed by console releases of the game as well, with PC and phones remaining the primary platforms.

After a brief clash, Joker is able to break the hooded figure's white mask, revealing it to be the Phantom X protagonist, who then proceeds to shoot him.

In the Japanese demo shown at Tokyo Game Show 2024, the cutscenes were altered to show blood in the protagonist's awakening much like how the awakening in Persona 5 were handled.

As the male silent protagonist (who is named by the player, though he is canonically named Nagisa Kamishiro[d], but also Persona 5 The Phantom X given the codename Wonder) attending the school in modern-day Tokyo, players experience the story events, answer questions in class, and freely explore the city after school or during days off in order to engage in various activities.

P5X altered the design of some Personas from the base Persona 5 to be less sexual due to censorship regulations in China (however, other versions of the game feature the uncensored designs, with some exceptions such as the Riders having metallic arms):
